Mineral Oils Iodine Number
PhosLube – Mineral Oils Iodine Number
The mineral oils iodine number is a measure of fatty acids or unsaturates (olefins and aromatics). These unsaturates typically aren’t found in mineral oils or any oils that have gone through an extensive refining process. Aromatic content can be controlled by setting certain specifications for ultraviolet absorpsion. The known weight of the sample being tested is dissolved in a specific type of solvent. The solvent is then maintained at a certain temperature and is titrated with bromide-bromate. The bromine number is the number of grams of bromine that will react with 100g of the sample under specific test conditions. It is used to determine unsaturated portions in oil. Determination of an end point depends on the test method being applied.
